| Miami Red Sox lose in semi-finals in July 4 Star & Stripes Cash Prize Tournament Jupiter FLA July 5, 2011 The Miami Red Sox tournament team tied for third place in the Stars & Stripes cash prize tournament held over the July 4th holiday weekend at the Roger Dean Stadium complex in Jupiter, Florida. In addition to the Miami Red Sox, the six team tournament drew four teams from Orlando and one team from Fort Lauderdale, Team USA. The cash prize tournament, sponsored by USSSA Baseball, offered $2000 to the winner and $1000 to the runner up. Game 1: Matt Leban pitched a complete game and collected three hits, leading Miami to a 5-2 win over the Orlando Vipers in the tournament opener. Game 2: The Sox lose in a blow out, 13-3, to the Orlando Rays as the team played sloppy and several key players were injured. Due to a half day rain delay the Sox lost some key players due to prior commitments. Ouch! Game 3: Hall of Famer, John Emmons, pitched a gem of a game against the defending champions, Orlando Cardinals, going seven innings before leaving the game with a 5-2 lead. He picked off two runners and the team played great defense and added a double play to help dominate early. Clearly dominant, the Cards were only too happy to see him depart. Sadly, a Sox defensive collapse in the seventh yielded four runs and the Orlando Cards rallied to win 6-5. Next up: With a 1-2 record, it was do-or-die for the Sox against the team that had earlier beaten the Cardinals, the Orlando Yankees. Game 4: Hall of Famer, Bobby Greenwald, picked up the 435th win of his career as he dominated the hot hitting Orlando Yankees and the Red Sox rallied to win 3-2. Prior to striking for three runs in the seventh on a two run double by Ulpi Puentes and an RBI single by Alberto Rodriguez, the Orlando Cardinals pitcher had struck out 12 batters in six innings. With the win, the Red Sox advanced to the semi-finals while sending the Yankees packing. Game 5: Veteran George Kenhan took the hill as the Sox, with their 2-2 record, advanced to the semi-final game against top seeded Orlando Cardinals. The Red Sox, playing with a skeleton crew, were up to the challenge but fell behind early 2-0 with a monster rain storm approaching. Ultimately, the Red Sox were to be left tormented after the game was called due to a monsoon with a score of 4-2 in favor of the Cardinals. And just like that the tournament was over.
